Hotel Tainan
For service and comfort this deserves to be in the top end but we're putting it here to let you know what a good deal it is, especially weekdays when a standard room goes for as low as around NT$2200.
Tainan City Labour Recreation Centre
Part of the Youth Guesthouse Network, but anyone can stay here. Rooms are very basic, in an institutional kind of way. It's just south of Jiankang Rd on the left inside a large complex.
Tainan Student Hostel
The double and twin rooms are pretty plain, and the hostel is a bit out of central Tainan, but it's a good place to stay if you're a young traveller and want to meet young Taiwanese. There's a 15% weekday discount.
Confucius Inn
Our favourite midrange hotel in Tainan by a Confucian mile. This professionally run hotel, directly south of the Confucius Temple, could easily charge much more. Rooms have a spiffy modern décor, with large comfy beds.
Hann Gong Hotel
Rooms are nondescript but clean, and the location, near the train station, is good. Singles and doubles are NT$100 cheaper on weekdays.
Cheng Kuang Hotel
Rooms are small, simply furnished but well maintained, except for some bathrooms that have moulding going black. If this bothers you, ask for another room. This hotel is conveniently close to the train station.
Tayih Landis
This established five-star hotel is noted for its good service, management and top-notch food and beverage outlets. Rooms have a pretty standard luxury design, but are spacious and feature very cosy large beds.
Cambridge Hotel
Run by the same company as the Teacher's Hostel, but ageing a little less gracefully, the Cambridge is well positioned in the business district, a stone's throw from the Chihkan Towers.
Teacher's Hostel
Formerly the Confucius Inn, this professionally run hotel, directly south of the Confucius Temple, could easily charge much more. Rooms have spiffy modern decor, with large comfy beds.
Ing Wang Hotel
A popular budget hotel just a stone's throw from Chihkan Towers (down the back alleys). Rooms are small but bright, and a small breakfast (and very friendly owners) is thrown into the deal.
Ta Lee Hotel
Rooms are surprisingly fresh looking and well appointed, for the price.
