This award-winning gourmet restaurant is a special-occasion place. Thoughtful and intriguing dishes are predominantly fishy, and include smoked mussels with pickled cucumber and baked anglerfish with cherry tomatoes and risotto. For a really exceptional blow-out, go for the seven-course degustation fish menu. Awkwardly, the restaurant closes from mid-June to late August.

If you're feeling anaemic, this upmarket steakhouse is the answer, offering all manner of meat, including T-bone steaks, veal sirloin and rack of lamb. Solid meals are served on solid African oak tables, and you get a good view of busy Linnégatan as you eat.

One for the veggies, Andrum does an all-day lunch buffet which is excellent value for money. Choose your plate size, then select from a spread of salads, hot mains and homemade breads. It's simple, tasty, wholesome stuff, and cheerfully recommended.

Bliss
Bliss has one of the hippest interiors in Göteborg, with low designer seats, multicoloured fairy lights, and superb food. It's a real night-time joint: if you're not up to a big meal, you can share tapas-style bar snacks and dance to live DJs until late.

Bombay is quite a busy lunchtime spot. It does good-value Indian dishes to eat in or take away, with decent tandoori and vegetarian selections.

You're spoilt for choice along Kunsportsavenyn, although prices can be higher than in other parts of town. This classic, classy eatery has good light meals on its menu, including Caesar salad and a club sandwich, plus more substantial main courses.

One giant mass of tables (don't expect any privacy), this slick place attracts 20-something crowds. All the usual coffee 'n' café snacks are served up, although one feels the social scene is more important.

This is a magnificent fish and seafood restaurant in former East India Company buildings. It has an impressive circular dining room called Blåskajsa, and an equally impressive cellar of over 400 wines.

Java Kaffebar
Along the leafy Vasagatan boulevard, near the university, there are quite a few cafés. Java Kaffebar is a true student haunt, thick with dreadlocks, dyed hair and nipple rings. It offers cheap bagels and sandwiches to its customers.

A casual Italian-American restaurant-bar, where you can slap ketchup on your US burgers 'n' steaks, or get misty-eyed about the old country with Sicilian-style bruschetta, pizza and pasta. Its Sunday brunch is perfect for soaking up Saturday night's beer.

Not far from the hostel area, Kalaya has authentic Thai cuisine, including soup, noodle and curry choices.

A newish spot along the main drag, the Ruby is perpetually abuzz with diners and spectators; nestle into the 'red corner' for some tapas, or have a drink on the terrace and watch the human traffic go by. Food is served late.
