This is one of the prettiest hotels in Sigiriya, thanks to its spectacular views of Sigiriya rock that reflect off the shimmering swimming pool; non-guests can use the pool for Rs 200.
Twitchers flock to this place, lured by its resident naturalist who leads bird-watching trips. The hotel has 76 rooms, and there are great views of Sigiriya rock from the dining room and large pool area (Rs 250 for non-guests).
Any place that chauffeurs its guests around in a 50 year-old Morris Minor is worth mentioning. Not only does Nilmini offer a cool taxi service, it also lends out push bikes at no cost.
This is a compact and friendly place 500m from the Inamaluwa junction on Sigiriya Rd. With spotless bathrooms and an outdoor restaurant, it’s a pleasant spot. Rooms downstairs are smaller and don’t have hot water.
An obvious choice for travellers with a floral fetish, this is a small family home absolutely bursting with flowers, both plastic and genuine. The very nana decor is maintained by a friendly family that tries hard to please.
This place has several cabins set around frog-filled ponds. It’s not as grand as the name suggests – the rooms are actually pretty average – but the common dining area is nice enough and they have Ayurvedic massage.
Hidden away on 200 acres of unfenced grasslands between the Kandalama Hills and Pothana Lake, this boutique resort takes its name from the wild elephants that often wander through the area.
This simple but tastefully designed rest house has lovely views of Sigiriya rock and a peaceful atmosphere. The 14 rooms are clean and tastefully decorated in faux colonial. There’s a large, airy restaurant with friendly service.
Despite the rather ungainly facade, this is a good spot: large, clean rooms, some with balconies, overlook a well-kept garden, and there’s a pool (Rs 200 for non-guests). Hotel Eden Garden is 100m from the junction, at Inamaluwa.
The father-and-son team that runs Globetrotter will do their best to make you feel welcome. Their property includes five rooms in separate earthen cottages that are, suffice it to say, pretty basic.
