Lonely Planet review for Balthazar

On a strip of embassies (US and Austrian included - so no Schwarzenegger jokes), Balthazar is among Bucharest's classiest restaurants, filling the ground floor and front courtyard of a superbly maintained old villa. Snazzy locals and business lunchers come for Thai/French fusion, lots of seafood and filet mignon.

They think too much of themselves

    groeswen does not recommend this,

As we were the only customer, we asked our waiter if the music could be turned down, he turned it off for us. Some time later another, charmless waiter turned the music back on. He refused to turn it off when I asked, telling him that it was our wedding anniversary and that I was enjoying listening to the birds singing, and that I was prepared for the music to go back on if they had other diners arrive. The nice original waiter then approached us to apologise, telling us that they would get into trouble if the owner arrived at the restaurant and found the music not playing. This episode spoiled what would have otherwise been a fine evening out. I have not received a reply to the email that I sent to the restaurant complaining about the music. The appetizers and main courses were not great, the dessert chocolate fondue was superb. There are better restaurant in Bucharest with outstanding food and they know how to treat their customers.

    Le French Diner

    baal recommends this,

Bucharest is a big city full of life, packed with malls even in the middle of the city. To reach the restaurant we had to walk through the small Icon Garden. Balthazar is the best French restaurant in Bucharest and is a celebrity favorite; actors like Nicole Kidman, Larry Hagman, Wesley Snipes, Armand Assante and Kristanna Loken are a few celebrities who have dined at this restaurant.

The restaurant is housed inside an old 19th Century modified villa, pretty large for the downtown area, it has a beautiful and unique look, a combination between classic and modern design with a comfortable and elegant atmosphere. It’s very intimate, it doesn't offer much space, the tables are small and very close to each other, nevertheless the service is excellent, the waiters ware polite to everyone, they always smiled and would bow in front of us.

We order Broiled Monk fish with spinach and goat cheese frittata, topped with roasted red pepper coulis, and it was delicious, during the whole meal we almost didn't say a word, food portions wear generous compared with most restaurants, we ate and we wear satisfied. We complete the diner with a Newton 2002 Unfiltered Chardonnay Wine and Crème brulee at dessert.

We could not have asked for a nicer evening, this restaurant is heaven if you like French food.
