A low-key resort with concrete duplex cottages that are a bit on the poky side. Go for the more expensive stand-alone huts, which are large, homey and well decorated. The abundant beachside hammocks provide good sunset vantage points.
One of the oldest resorts on Siquijor, Islander’s is a loose village of lovely nipa cottages right on the water. It has a great restaurant and free wi-fi.
Coral Cay is on a lovely stretch of beach at Solangon, about 3km from San Juan. The charming wood-floored rooms, set in a garden with coconut trees and orchids, have bamboo-and-pebble walls and a sliding panel separating the bedroom and terrace.
Call ahead to book these wonderful cottages perched on rocky outcrops over the water. You won’t get a beach experience here, but the unbroken view of empty ocean is unbeatable.
Between Kagusua and Salagdoong is the large horseshoe-shaped Maria Bay, where you’ll find Princesa Bulakna Resort.
Swiss Stars Guest House is an excellent-value hotel close to Siquijor town. The twin rooms are cavernous with stone couches built into the wall, while doubles are smaller but well lit and cosy.
The Latin American theme is a bit Disney-esque (dude, we’re in Siquijor already), but it grows on you. Waves lap right up to the front door of the waterfront cottages, which are more like mini houses with their upmarket interiors.
Villa Marmarine, a new place on Siquijor’s north coast, has been an instant success through word of mouth alone.
It’s a lovely walk down a trellis-covered pathway from the simple and clean hillside rooms to the beach. Even the fan rooms have a few pleasant but rare touches, such as reading lamps and complimentary coffee and tea.
