Must-see hotels in Pakistan

  • Zam Zam Hotel

    Karakoram Highway

Small, passably clean rooms have hot showers and there's a restaurant on site. It's hidden away, 50m west of the bridge.

  • Hotel Ocean

    Karachi

More of the same as the Al-Bilal. Rooms are accordingly simple, but staff roll out a friendly Pashtun welcome to guests.

  • Relax Inn

    Peshawar

The single rooms here are poky but the doubles are bearable. Rooms are pretty clean but check the bathrooms to be sure.

  • Mountain Palace Tourist Lodge

    Karakoram Highway

Next door and under the same management as Shimshal Tourist Lodge, the rooms here are more basic with bucket hot water.

  • Retiring Rooms

    Pakistan

The basic rooms at the train station are a possibility for those holding ongoing tickets (departure within 24 hours).

  • Foreigner Tourist Paradise

    Pakistan

Signed opposite the Mastuj Tourist Guesthouse, this offers similar fare, reasonably basic, but clean and friendly.

  • Hotel Sadpara International

    Karakoram Highway

Unfortunately, the simple rooms, a few doubles with TV, and restaurant are all looking very neglected and unkempt.

  • Hotel Shalimar

    Pakistan

A standout in Multan's lacklustre budget bundle, the rooms here are not too bad apart from being a smidgen gloomy.

  • Shangri-La Hotel

    Karakoram Highway

Shangri-La Hotel is a downmarket place by the bus stop north of the bridge. It has small rooms with squat toilets.

  • Bolan Hotel

    Karakoram Highway

The worn and rather grubby Bolan near the general bus stand offers the cheapest acceptable rooms with hot showers.

  • Shalimar

    Balochistan

Near the main bus stand, this is a good option for the price, with clean rooms and a restaurant. Open all year.

  • PTDC Motel

    Islamabad & Rawalpindi

Also near the museum, the rooms lack oomph but are comfortable enough and there's a restaurant on the premises.

  • JB Palace Hotel

    Southern Punjab

Near Fowara Chowk, this is also one of Bahawalpur's better choices despite having simple, somewhat dank rooms.

  • Hotel Marina

    Balochistan

Opposite the Hotel Deluxe. Rooms here are basic, with a slightly stale air and the occasionally dank bathroom.

  • NAPWD Resthouse

    Karakoram Highway

Shigar village has a very pleasant NAPWD resthouse with good walk-in odds in May/June and September/October.

    Islamabad & Rawalpindi

Friendly Al-Azam has small rooms with fans, though the top-floor rooms with shower and balcony are better.

  • NAPWD Baltoro Resthouse

    Karakoram Highway

Three kilometres south of the bazaar is the NAPWD Baltoro Resthouse, but public transport is nonexistent.

  • Hotel Taj

    Pakistan

A good location, however, the rooms are bare and very grotty. Should only be considered in an emergency.

  • Starlite Hotel

    Pakistan

Another decent choice. Apart from having good rooms, it cops less traffic noise than many other hotels.

  • Sapna Inn

    Pakistan

In nearby Larkana, seat of the Bhutto family. The Sapna can arrange transport and tours to Moenjodaro.

  • Gulmit Tourist Inn

    Karakoram Highway

Fully occupied by KKH workers at the time of research, but recommended should it reopen for business.

  • TDCP Motel

    Southern Punjab

You can stay at TDCP Motel. Advance reservations are recommended (especially from June to September).

  • Hunza Inn 5 Brothers

    Karakoram Highway

The run-down, rather filthy rooms with squat toilet and cold shower make this option a last resort.

  • Shandur Hotel

    Pakistan

At Brook Laspur there is the basic Shandur Hotel if you need to stay to catch transport to Shandur.

  • Chinnar Hotel

    Islamabad & Rawalpindi

This no-frills place has poky and nondescript (but bearable) rooms, some with views over the Mall.

The tired-looking rooms are bare, with thinning sheets, but passably clean and fair at this price.

The small K6 & K7 Camping Place is one of several camp sites where you can purchase hot food.

    Pakistan

The best accommodation option, with reasonably clean and airy rooms and an attached restaurant.

    Islamabad & Rawalpindi

At the time of research this hotel was being renovated; it's scheduled to reopen in early 2008.

  • New Bahawalpur Hotel

    Southern Punjab

The rooms here are decidedly dull but still score higher marks than many other cheapies.

Green Retreat Hotel has spacious, comfortable rooms, sprawling grounds and a restaurant.

  • Ghandughoro Camping Place

    Karakoram Highway
