The chefs have dug deep into a box of ancient Mexican recipes, some going back to the Aztecs and Mayans, and have come up with some rather unusual - but by all accounts, delicious - concoctions. It's a formal place, so dress well for dinner. Breakfast & lunch are more casual.

In a residential area just north of Blvd Agua Caliente, this family eatery serves a range of delicious antojitos , including flautas , sopes, huaraches and gorditas (all variations on the meat- and cheese-loaded tortilla) prepared Mexico City-style.

El Rodeo is a fine-beef restaurant with eccentric ranch décor: towering cacti out front, antique gas pumps, Coke machines and a shrine to assassinated PRI presidential candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio inside. The steaks are delicious.

This massive hacienda-style place takes classic mexicanismo way over the top. It has an energetic vibe and good Mexican favorites and does set menus that will send you home with an over-stuffed belly and a dreamy head. It's also a good place for just a drink.

Tijuana's hippest Japanese restaurant is minimalist to the extreme and very popular for its fusion cuisine, which draws more from Japan than Mexico. Sushi, sashimi, teriyaki dishes and a couple of curries are the primary dishes.

This former sandwich shop is now a full-fledged diner. It's bright and cheerful, the breakfasts are excellent and the tortas are among the best in town. Good soups, too.

Restaurant Rome's
For some good ol' family-style cooking, slip into this old-school diner, complete with jukebox and big booths. The set lunch (including dessert and drink) is a bargain. Otherwise choose from modest, but well prepared Mexican plates. Great soups.

Tacos Aaron
If you're driving up to Tijuana's beaches be sure to stop for tacos at Tacos Aaron, across from the Calimax as you enter Playas from the toll road. The truck whips out some of the best, most imaginative tacos on the entire peninsula.

Tacos El Gordo
Near Mercado Hidalgo, tacos El Gordo enjoys cult status among night owls. The quality of the tacos, which are perhaps a tad too authentic for some gringos, is high, and the lines get long in the wee morning hours.

Can't go wrong here; the cantina-like atmosphere is great at this Tijuana classic next door to the Jai Alai building.

You can't beat the friendly service, good prices, and delicious tortas, burgers and fries at this family-style diner. There are several Mexican dishes, and a long list of egg-type breakfasts on the menu, too.

Villa Saverios
Villa Saverios takes the concept of 'Baja Med' to absurd heights. The results? Try beef cheeks stuffed with ancho chilies; mesquite-grilled quail; tuna sashimi; gourmet burritos; sliced raw lobster with a chile vinaigrette; filet mignon carpaccio; or abalone served in its shell and smothered with chipotle cream sauce (gulp). Classical music tinkles over a fairly formal dining room, so dress appropriately.

For years this cozy Italian restaurant has been serving generous portions of reasonably priced pizza and pasta. Head to the back and you'll feel like the Godfather in the plush leather booths and dim lighting.
