Lonely Planet review for @Home Café

Wanna walk on the wild side of Tokyo’s fetish for kawaii (cuteness) ? Try being served coffee by girls dressed as French maids! You’ll be welcomed as go-shujinsama (master) the minute you enter this cafe. It’s titillating, perhaps, but it’s no sex joint – just (more or less) innocent fun for Akihabara’s otaku. Dishes such as curried rice are even topped with smiley faces. And business is expanding: @Home Café now occupies four floors, with themes from pop princess to old Japan, with varying opening days. From Chūō-dōri, turn left where you see Sofmap.

Mold on the wall is kawaii?

    pascalforget does not recommend this,

I expected a nice cute place... What I found was a spectacular tourist trap in every way. Has somebody visited the place before putting it in the guide, without any warning?

The place is creepy, with mold on the walls, and we had a nice view of an escalator trough dirty windows. The "kawaii" food, covered with Heinz ketchup, seems to come straight out of cans. I would have loved to show you... But you can't take pictures! You have to pay 500 yens if you want one; you get a cheap Polaroid with bad lighting signed by your maid, and they decide were and how they take the picture. They take more time slowly telling you all the exciting (???) things you can do (play childish game with your maid!!!) for extra money than serving your food or drinks.

If all this is supposed to be cute, I don't get it. I seriously considered leaving without paying.

You'd better go to the Gundam café nearby, that is quite spectacular.
