Hida Takayama Tenshō Ji Youth Hostel

This peaceful hostel (with a rather early 10pm curfew) occupies an attractive hillside temple in Teramachi. Rooms are Japanese style, and you have a choice between shower near the rooms or small bath on the other side of the temple.

Ō Machi

Ō-Machi offers small but clean tatami rooms and has many foreign fans. Staff speak some English and guests can use the kitchen. Located in Sanmachi-suji near the Takayama Museum of Local History, it's set back from the main street.

This excellent ryokan has handsome tatami rooms, a spacious onsen bath and decadent dinners and breakfasts. Several rooms have irori (hearth), and some have private bathrooms (all have toilets). The staff speaks some English.
