Try to find a place to stay near the city centre, so you can walk around and enjoy the nightlife. Otherwise you'll be on or near approach roads, in which case you might prefer to opt for something further afield that will be more bucolic. Alexandra Tce on O'Connell Ave (which runs south from O'Connell St) has several midrange B&Bs. Ennis Rd, leading northwest towards Shannon, also has a selection, although most are at least 1km from the centre.

A good option 13km northwest of the city. Rooms range from singles with private bath to six-bed dorms. There are bus connections daily (except Sunday) to Limerick and Shannon Airport.
A new and stylish place right on the river, this hotel eschews frills in order to keep prices moderate. Many of the 55 somewhat compact rooms have good views.
A bold exclamation mark on the waterfront development, this striking hotel has modernist accents and is a vision of polished metal and glass. Rooms at the end of corridors seem to hover over the river.
Right across from the bus and train station, this long-established hotel is busy and shows the wear, although the location is as central as you can get. The 30 rooms are not huge and will remind you of a time when everybody smoked.
A cute little B&B with a traditional high-pitched roof. The six rooms here vary from singles to rather sizeable family rooms. It’s in Coonagh, a small town off the N18, 5km west of Limerick.
The 26 rooms here are of a typical modern motel standard (aka blandly comfortable) and the location, only a 1.25km walk from the centre is a plus (although the road is busy). The real treat are the picnic tables for enjoying a refreshment outside.
