Collego
A mostly open-air thatched beach bar, Collego is prime real estate for gay expats and their friends. On Sundays it veritably throbs with life as Liz Taylor lookalikes cruise about. There's a little path from Jl Kayu Jati, but the easiest way to get here the first time is by going to the beach at Pura Petitenget and walking north about 200m.

Capt Cook
You may not discover Hawaii at this corner place but you can explore the pool table or settle back for a lengthy voyage at the bar.

C
Café Zucchini
Hidden behind trees, shrubs and a vivid yellow-striped canopy, this Italian cafe is an ideal refuge from the surrounding retail pressures. Juices and various coffee drinks are the stars. There are a few substantial Italian mains if you need real sustenance.

Café Seminyak
Right in front of the busy Bintang Supermarket, this cute and casual place has excellent smoothies, and sandwiches made with freshly baked bread.

E
Bush Telegraph Pub
The focus at this cavernous place is on sports TV. The only action you're likely to find is the latest from the world Formula One. You also can tuck into Australian pub fare.

Bounty
Set on a pirate ship in a mini-mall of food and drink, the Bounty is a vast open-air disco that humps, thumps and pumps all night. Play seaman and get down on the poop deck to hip hop, tribal, trance and anything else the DJs come up with.

Bottle Shop 'Shut up and drink' is the slogan at this simple place open to the street. There's a small menu and free wi-fi. Have a cheap cold one and ponder your next move.

Bali Jo
Simply fun – albeit with falsies. Drag queens rock the house, the crowd lining the street and the entire neighbourhood with songs amped to 11 nightly. Surprisingly intimate, it's a good place to lounge about for a few, even when the boys are busy out the back with their make-up.

Bahiana
Rum flows almost as freely as the moves on the dance floor at this salsa-themed club. Live music alternates with DJs; there are salsa lessons at 10pm many nights.

Bacio
Aims higher than its neighbour Double Six in terms of decor – and drink prices. If you own a Ferrari, you'll go to this house- and concept-heavy club and boast about it. If you don't, you'll lie.

Apache Reggae Bar
One of the rowdier spots in Kuta, Apache jams in locals and visitors, many of whom are on the make. The music is loud, but that pounding you feel the next day is from the free-flowing arak (local spirit) served in huge plastic jugs.

Warung Sunrise
This aptly named beachside bar has tables and chairs on the sand, which will cushion your fall should you over-indulge on the signature – and potent – arak drinks. Of course, hearing Bob Marley here – even when played live by a cover band – may drive you to drink.
