Indulgence is the order of the day at this swanky village-style place, designed by renowned local architect Charles Correa, located 1km down the coast from Dona Paula at Vanguinim Beach.
In no way spectacular, this place just off the end of 31st January Rd is perfectly acceptable for a comfortable and air-conditioned, if fairly uncharismatic, stay.
Set in an old and rambling bungalow near the Chapel of St Sebastian, the Park Lane has been popular with travellers for years, despite its seemingly ever-extending list of rules.
For a really basic stay, without quite so much of a disturbing prison-like feel as some of the budget options along the 31st January Rd, check into one of the eight rooms at the Udipi, just around the corner from the main post office.
Down the road from the Panjim Inn, the nine divine, colonial fantasy rooms at Panjim Pousada are set off a stunning central courtyard. Various doorways and spiral staircases lead to the rooms; those on the upper level are by far the best.
Undeniably atmospheric, if rather pricey for the standard of facilities on offer, this lovely option sports atmospheric rooms with mosaic-covered bathrooms, deep bath tubs, and lots of quaint antiques, arranged around a serene indoor inner courty.
This GTDC-run establishment has as much charm and character as a bowl of porridge, but it's a useful standby if all the goodies are taken. Popular with Indian businessmen.
With a nice location near the river in a calm and central part of town, not all of the 30 clinical-but-clean rooms of this four-storey building face the river, so make sure you check out a few first.
Run by a friendly elderly gentleman, this lovely place set in a pretty old Portuguese town house offers plain but comfortable rooms, and a little rooftop terrace for sunny breakfasting (dishes Rs15 to Rs25).
You may not receive a warm welcome or a well-decorated room at the dilapidated Republica; indeed, the service is charismatically gloomy and the decor decidedly grim, but that’s all part of the charm of this elderly, ramshackle wooden building.
This decent-value budget hotel doesn't extend the warmest of welcomes, but it's in a quiet and friendly neighbourhood and has six basic, clean rooms with midget-sized balconies.
With its bright, cheerful balconies, beautiful ground floor oyster-shell windows and general, slightly musty air of yesteryear, the Mayfair is an atmospheric central option.
Perched high above Panaji, with lovely views from its terrace and small pool, this is a great option for a little bit of luxury in the midst of the city.
