Introducing Parque Nacional Montaña de Celaque
One of Honduras’ most impressive national parks, the Montaña de Celaque is a lush, steep, cloud forest, just over 6km from Gracias. It boasts El Cerro de las Minas (2849m), the highest peak in Honduras – a good, tiring hike.

Celaque, which means ‘box of water’ in the local Lencan dialect, is an appropriate name: Celaque’s 11 rivers supply water to all of the surrounding communities, northern Honduras, and parts of El Salvador. It also has a majestic waterfall that is visible from the entire valley.
The park is rich in plant and animal life: 232 plant, 48 mammal, 269 bird and 18 reptile species make Celaque their home. Jaguars, pumas, ocelots and a number of rare endemic species have been spotted by lucky hikers. More common, but still elusive, are spider monkeys and quetzals. You have to be very quiet, and up very early, to see much wildlife, but if you don’t see many animals, the rugged pine and cloud forests are still rewarding.
