    Ste-Claire Market

Load up with market-fresh fruit and flowers plus the makings of a slap-up lunch from the boulangeries (bakeries) and charcuteries (delicatessens) at les Halles Ste-Claire, Grenoble's lovely old covered market since 1874. Or simply admire the elegant, glass-fronted facade and fountain.

  5. Haute Route

Ski de randonnée (ski touring), at its best between March and May, is big in Chamonix and the range of tours seemingly endless. The backcountry king is this classic six-day route from Chamonix to Zermatt in Switzerland, stopping en route at refuges. To tackle it you need to be an experienced off-piste skier and superfit. Shorter two-day trips (about €320 per person) are suitable for advanced skiers but ski de randonnée novices.
