    Ski de randonnée (ski touring), at its best between March and May, is big in Chamonix and the range of tours seemingly endless. The backcountry king is this classic six-day route from Chamonix to Zermatt in Switzerland, stopping en route at refuges. To tackle it you need to be an experienced off-piste skier and superfit. Shorter two-day trips (about €320 per person) are suitable for advanced skiers but ski de randonnée novices.
