  3. Le Duc Étienne

One of the longest standing nightspots in the city, next door to the Église St-Aurilien in the medieval quarter. The atmosphere is classically French - think wooden stools, lively chatter and plenty of Gauloises smoke - and the drinks range from eaux de vie right through to Irish pints.

  4. Le Tabernacle

One of the city's hot spots for new bands and live music, this grungy place is half rock venue, half backstreet pub. There are regular gigs, cheap drinks and it's open very late, so it gets jammed on weekends.

  5. Zazoo

The owner of this quirky bar has a real thing about the colour purple - just check out the royal-purple cushions, mauve walls and lilac furniture. There are even a few plum-coloured cocktails to try if you're in the mood.
