La Mot Bistrot
One of many cafés and brasseries dotted around place de la Motte, this little brasserie is usually packed at lunchtime with local shop workers, and it's an excellent place to soak up the market atmosphere. The menu is stuffed with brasserie standards - mainly salads, steaks and casseroles.

Le Bistrot d'Olivier
After a spot of lunch on the cheap? Then do as the locals do and head straight for this great little French diner inside the main market hall. Squeeze yourself onto one of the wooden benches and tuck into a hearty, three-course. There's a limited choice, and if you don't like the look of the set menu, head over to the almost-identical Chez François opposite to see what's on offer there.

Le Bistrot Gourmand
This reliable bistro has a good-value menu centring on gourmet salads, gratins and casseroles, and a choice of dining areas - take your pick from the traditionally themed salle à manger (dining room) or the bright conservatory overlooking place Winston Churchill.

Les Petits Ventres
Looking at the meat-heavy menu of the 'Small Stomachs', you might well wonder whether the restaurant's name refers more to the customers or to what's being served up on their plates. If you're going to try regional delicacies such as tripes de la rue (tripe cooked to a regional recipe), andouillettes (sausage made of chitterlings) or tête de veau (boiled calf's head) then this is the place to do it - but it's definitely one for the carnivores.

Table de Jean
Just along the street from Les Petits Ventres, this is a cosy little restaurant that's all about hearty, down-to-earth country cooking - dishes such as braised beef and brandade de morue (cod brandade) are house specialities, and there's always a blackboard of daily specials.
