Introducing Avebury

While the tour buses head straight for Stonehenge, prehistoric purists make for the massive stone circle at Avebury. Though it undoubtedly lacks the dramatic trilithons of its sister site across the plain, Avebury is arguably a more rewarding place to visit. It's bigger, older and a great deal quieter, and a large section of the village is actually inside the stones – footpaths wind around them, allowing you to really soak up the extraordinary atmosphere. Avebury also boasts a surrounding landscape that's rich in prehistoric sites, and a unique attraction: a manor house where extensively restored rooms span five completely different eras.
