Another microbrewery (what's in the water in Olomouc?), this is a bit bigger than Moritz and it's easier to find a walk-in table here. The microbrewery produces several excellent versions of unpasteurised yeast beer. The menu features mostly Czech standards done well, plus a few dishes that experiment with Olomouc’s signature stinky cheese.

This elegant Italian restaurant is the best in the immediate vicinity for a proper tablecloth dinner with all the trimmings. We like the calamari with arugula garlic and cherry tomatoes. Offers daily lunch specials with mains priced under 150Kč. Handsome light decor with hardwood floors; excellent wine list.

Promenáda
The house restaurant of the Hotel Promenáda has appeared in some 'best of' lists for the Czech Republic and is a perennial favourite on online forums. The elegant dining area is conducive to a memorable evening, and the food is very good (though perhaps not always worth the steep prices).

Na Parkánu
Don't overlook this pleasant pub/restaurant, attached to the Brewery Museum. It may look a bit touristy, but the traditional Czech food is top rate, and the beer, naturally, could hardly be better. Try to snag a spot on the summer garden. Don't leave without trying the nefiltrované pivo (unfiltered beer).

This microbrewery and restaurant is a firm local favourite. We reckon it's a combination of the terrific beers, good value food, and a praise-worthy 'no smoking' policy. In summer, the beer garden's the only place to be. Advance booking a must.

Modrý Zub
This slick, stylish and deservedly popular noodle bar is ideal for a quick hit of chilli and ginger, just a few paces away from Wenceslas Square. Sit on the high bench along the back wall and peruse a menu that includes dim sum, warm Thai salads, red, green and yellow Thai curries, stir-fries with fresh Asian flavours, and noodles served all ways.

No visit to České Budějovice would be complete without stopping at this renovated 16th-century meat market (now a popular pub) for excellent Czech food and a cold Budvar. You'll find all the Czech staples, including the house 'brewer's goulash', on the food menu. The drinks menu is equally important: try the superb unfiltered yeast beer. Advance booking essential.

Sushi master Tadayoshi Ebina and top seafood chef Petr Fučík have combined to bring award-winning cooking to Brno. Koishi has earned a reputation for excellent sushi, but it has since expanded its range to include more traditional European and Czech cooking, with an Asian touch. They have an excellent wine list as well. Reserve in advance.

One of the hottest restaurants in town is this Spanish-style tapas place not far from the Jiřího z Poděbrad metro station. Descend into a lively space to see a red-faced chef minding the busy grill. Our faves include marinated trout with horseradish and pork belly confit with celeriac. Service is prompt and friendly. Book ahead.

A great choice for lunch or dinner, right in the heart of the spa centre. Though the presentation borders on extreme kitsch, the food is actually very good and the atmosphere not unlike a classic Czech pub.

Hamtam
Vršovice doesn't have many really good restaurants, but one of our favourites is this relatively new spot that mixes Turkish and Middle Eastern influences to winning effect. The menu changes daily depending on what's fresh and in season, so you'll have to take your chances. On our visit the beef roasted in a coffee-flavoured sauce served on wide noodles was a big hit.

If you've come to Plzeň on a beer pilgrimage, then another essential visit is for a beer-garden lunch at this spiffy microbrewery. Meals include well-priced steaks and salads. The highlight is the drinks menu: homemade 11° light and dark beers, complemented by an excellent (and still relatively rare) yeast beer.

It’s hard to go wrong with this big historic pub on a busy corner near the centre. The unpasteurised 12° Pilsner Urquell is arguably the best beer in Olomouc. The smallish menu is loaded with Czech classics, like the ever-popular Španělský ptáček (literally ‘Spanish bird’), a beef roulade stuffed with smoked sausage, parsley and a hard-boiled egg.

This cosy pub with a backstreet location is a nice choice for well-prepared Czech specialties like pork knee (served in tradtional style with a side of mustard and several hunks of bread). The beer, from the small Bernard brewery, is a welcome change of pace from the larger national brands.

Aberdeen Angus Steakhouse
For our money, this may be the best steakhouse in all of the Czech Republic. The meats hail from the nearby Angus Farm, where the livestock is raised organically. There are several cuts and sizes on offer; lunch options include a tantalizing cheeseburger. The downstairs dining room is cosy; there's also a creekside terrace. Book in advance.

Rustic and authentic Spanish food (the owners cooked in Spain for several years) can be enjoyed either in the Castilian-style garden or in the lovely heritage interior here.
