Uyuni Restaurants

  1. Arco Iris

Something of an Uyuni classic for pizza and drinks, this place is busy, popular and friendly, but the service is fairly slow. It's a fine place to socialize and to link up with other travelers to form a tour group.

  2. Café Bar Ranking

This relaxed spot, which funds the adjacent Ranking information office, is a very enticing place for a tea or coffee (it has a huge range), meal or sociable late night drink - try the 'llama sperm' shooter. It's very atmospheric with a salt floor, friendly service and some of the best salar photos you are likely to see. It's also a good place to learn the classic Bolivian dice games.

  3. Kactus

In an upstairs location, this is a popular restaurant with tasty pastas, simple soups, international dishes and a few typical Bolivian choices, which are comfortably the best bet. It's let down somewhat by poor service, and it's hard not to feel sorry for the ragged macaw in the corner.

  4. La Loco

This friendly French-run restaurant and pub is a barn-like space that's lit low and furnished with comfortingly chunky wooden furniture around a log fire. There are plenty of drinks and a short but classy menu that offers croques monsieur (grilled ham and cheese sandwiches), crepes and llama steaks with a gourmet touch. There's better service from the boss than the staff.

  5. Minuteman Revolutionary Pizza

This convivial spot is a deserved travelers' favorite, and a real center for welcome human comforts after the sometimes harsh conditions around the salar . The pizzas are generously proportioned and extremely tasty, and it's also a cozy spot for a candlelit glass of wine or a hearty pre-tour breakfast. Enter through the Toñito Hotel.

  6. Place of Colors

This friendly café wins points for its charming name and keeps visitors happy with various breakfasts, sandwiches and baguettes, a great pique (hearty Bolivian favorite of chopped beef, sausages, chips and a spicy sauce) in the evening, and hot wine for that cold you caught on the salar tour. Small, simple and pleasing.

  7. Restaurant 16 de Julio

This place is better than it looks from the outside - the upstairs dining room is pleasant and a good choice for lunch or, in the evenings, pizza and pasta.
