There are hotels scattered throughout Sydney, but you'll find the biggest of the international chains following in the footsteps of the first convicts by pitching their tents in Circular Quay, The Rocks and the city centre. Given their location they cater in equal parts to business people and cashed-up holidaymakers, and they tend to offer all the bells and whistles: 24-hour room service, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, gym, spa, valet parking etc. Internet access is ubiquitous but rarely free.
Boutique hotels are differentiated by their much smaller size and, usually, less generic design aesthetic. Some occupy historic buildings, and the better ones have idiosyncratic features such as iPod docks and eclectic art.
