  1. A

    Café Mediterranean Bar Doppio

Alice’s locals duck down this laneway for huge and wholesome home-style breakfasts (eggs any style, pancakes), pita pizzas, burgers, pies and salads. It’s also a favoured meeting place for well-made coffee or fresh-pressed juice, either in the shade of the covered arcade or inside with local-events flyers wallpapering the walls.

  2. B

    Hanuman Restaurant

Stylish Hanuman tempts with Thai- and Indian-influenced cuisine. The delicate Thai entrées, including the signature dish of oysters, lemon grass and basil, are a real triumph. Although the menu is ostensibly Thai, featuring beef, chicken, seafood, jasmine rice and noodles, there are enough Indian dishes to satisfy a curry craving. There are several vegetarian offerings and a good wine list.

  3. C

    Casa Nostra

Choose your pasta and match it with a long list of classic Italian sauces and specials: from bolognese and pesto to a chef’s secret-recipe sauce. Thin-crust pizzas and mains dishes also arrive on the red-and-white-checked tablecloths among the plastic grapevines. Note that it’s BYO vino.

  4. D

    Overlanders Steakhouse

A local institution for big steaks, be they buffalo, kangaroo, crocodile or camel. And why stop at just one? Amid the drover’s decor (saddles, branding irons and the like) you can take the challenge of the Drover’s Blowout ($65), four courses including a platter of Aussie meats.

  5. E

    Thai Room

Perky Thai flavours of tamarind, garlic, basil and coconut milk make the perfect palate freshener in Alice’s dry climate. The modest menu mixes its signature spices with a variety of meats or straight veg. There’s no need to frock up, and the lunch specials are a bargain.

  6. F

    Flavours of India

There’s no Bollywood drama in the decor of this humble family restaurant. While covering ubiquitous curries and tandoori favourites, the menu includes a smattering of non-Indian meals. There are several vegetarian dishes, and though fully licensed, BYO is also possible.

  7. G

    Sporties

It may not strictly be a pub, but with sporting paraphernalia adorning the bar (which serves cold beer on tap) it may as well be. Street seating provides pole position to spectate while hoeing into a focaccia or baguette, pasta, or a pub-style meat-and-three veg meal.

    Red Dog

Join the throng at this Australiana-decorated place pumping out decent coffee and hearty breakfasts (eggs, pancakes or the whole-hog ‘bushman’s breakfast’), and a range of chicken burgers.

  9. Tinh & Lan Alice Vietnamese Restaurant

This atmospheric Vietnamese restaurant is set in a market garden illuminated with lanterns. All the favourites, spring and ricepaper rolls, pho (soup) and noodles, are deliciously prepared and the ingredients – growing all around you – couldn’t be fresher. Follow the signs off Colonel Rose Dr; it’s about 14km south of town.

    Bluegrass Restaurant

Let the relaxed staff guide you to a table or intimate booth in the lovely, low-lit interior of the historic CWA (Country Women's Association) building, or out into the leafy courtyard. The eclectic blackboard menu changes regularly to optimise seasonal produce, which always includes a number of veg options.

  17. O

    Red Ochre Grill

With innovative fusion cuisine featuring outback meats, as well as traditional favourites, this is one of the better eateries on Todd Mall. As well as familiar dishes of chicken, lamb, barramundi and beef, there’s camel, crocodile, emu and kangaroo infused with native berries, fruits and herbs. So there’s no chance you’ll say, ‘It tasted like chicken’.
