  • Mercado Municipal

    Mindelo

    The restored two-storey food market from 1784 is a great place to see sweet-talking vendors hawking local produce and medicinal herbs.

  • Old Palace

    Dire Dawa

    This large building is the former imperial residence of Haile Selassie. It's not open to the public and difficult to see from outside.

  • Transport Museum

    Western Cape

    There's an impressive private collection of vintage cars here, including two Daimlers from King George V's 1947 visit to South Africa.

  • Albany Natural Science Museum

    Sunshine Coast

    Covers a mishmash of subjects, from early human history to astronomy. The collection includes some impressive taxidermy and skeletons.

  • Grocott’s Mail

    Sunshine Coast

    Grocott’s Mail is one of Grahamstown's best examples of a preserved historic shopfront. It still houses a working newspaper office.

  • Museum

    Botswana

    There is a small, dusty museum at Main (Rhino) Camp with a handful of ethnographic exhibits and wall-sized quotes about the rock art.

  • Solar Barque Pits

    Giza

    On the east side of the Great Pyramid of Khufu note the solar barque pits that housed the giant ritual boats buried with the pharaoh.

  • Old German School

    Swakopmund

    The 1912 baroque-style Old German School was the result of a 1912 competition, which was won by budding German architect Emil Krause.

  • No. 7 Castle Hill

    Port Elizabeth

    This museum-house, occupying a picturesque cottage dating from 1827, evokes a settler family's life during the mid-Victorian period.

  • Cape Columbine Lighthouse

    West Coast & Swartland

    Built in 1936, the diminutive lighthouse is worth a brief pause. You can also stay over here in a simple cottage (double from R650).

    One of the first indepen­dent galleries, Mashrabia is bit cramped but represents the bigger names in painting, video and sculpture.

  • Swaminarayan Temple

    Mombasa

    The Swaminarayan Temple is stuffed with highlighter-bright murals that’ll make you feel as if you’ve been transported to Mumbai.

  • Torre de la Libertad

    Rio Muni

    Built in 2011 to celebrate Equatorial Guinea's independence, this imposing structure is surrounded by gardens and overlooks the sea.

  • Galerie d'Art Essaadi

    Carthage

    Owned and operated by photographer Mohamed Ali Essaadi, this space stages individual and group shows by young and emerging artists.

  • Maasai Market

    Mwanza

    Mwanza has a Maasai Market, with a couple of dozen Maasai selling beaded jewellery and medicines on both sides of the footbridge.

  • Lac Anosy

    Madagascar

    Located below, and visible from, the Haute-Ville, this lake is surrounded by flowering trees and is a popular place for a stroll.

    This art deco building facing Greenmarket Sq is constructed from sandstone and decorated with an attractive diamond-theme design.

  • Central Market

    Jinja

    This commercial market is across from the bus stand with vendors selling fruit and vegetables, among other produce, and clothing.

  • Red Wall Cave

    Zimbabwe

    One of the national park's more well-known caves, a 40-minute walk from the mountain hut.

  • Castle Entrance Gate

    Cape Town

    The main entrance to the Castle of Good Hope, crowned by a bell tower, replaced the original sea-facing entrance to the fortress.

  • Cecil Rhodes Statue

    Northern Cape

    Cecil John Rhodes is immortalised sitting atop his horse, map in hand, gazing northwards to the continent he wanted to colonise.

  • Franklin Nature Reserve

    Atop Naval hill, the Franklin Nature Reserve is a great place for a walk or a short drive to spot zebras, antelope and giraffes.

  • Gugulethu Seven Memorial

    This granite memorial commemorates seven young black activists from the townships who were murdered by the police here in 1986.

    West of the centre, the enormous Catholic cathedral has Roman-style mosaics showing some saints, including the Ugandan Martyrs.

    North of Fallana Gate the weekday livestock market features cows, goats and sheep, but no camels – these are sold at Babille.

    Off Sharia Mahmoud Bassiouni, as much a clubhouse as an exhibition space, frequented by Cairo’s art-world new and old guard.

  • Zaouia of Sidi Mehrez

    Final resting place of Sidi Mehrez, Tunis’ patron saint. Women offer prayers here to be endowed with a husband or children.

  • Irma Booysen Flora Reserve

    This small nature reserve, set up to preserve the area's coastal fynbos (fine bush), has several footpaths.

    This bronze statue, dedicated to Africans killed in WWI, is now a favourite haunt of street touts and dubious moneychangers.

    The windy location makes surfing less popular here than at other beaches on the Golden Mile. It has a very hairy shorebreak.

    The old and decrepit Woolworth's building on Sharia Memphis is one of Port Said's most lovely, rickety colonial remnants.

    The Morro Negro lighthouse, standing atop a 150m-high cape, is Cabo Verde's most easterly point. The views are spectacular.
