About 13 miles north of Albuquerque, and served by its own Rail Runner station, Sandia Pueblo was established around 1300 AD. Thanks to the wealth generated by Sandia Casino, it has successfully lobbied to prevent further development of Sandia Crest, which its people have long held sacred. The tribe welcome visitors to corn dances on its Feast Day (June 13).
Isleta Pueblo, 16 miles south of Albuquerque at I-25 exit 215, is best known for its church. Built in 1613, the San Augustin Mission has been in constant use since 1692. A few plaza shops sell local pottery, and there's gambling at the flash Isleta Resort & Casino. Visitors are welcome to the ceremonial dances on Saint Augustine's Day (September 4).
