Make reservations to dine on pork medallions in prickly pear-Tecate barbecue sauce, chipotle-glazed filet mignon and other gourmet goodies at this lovely spot in the painted-glass heart of La Fonda hotel, where local artist Ernest Martinez has graced more than 400 windows with his paintings over the last 50 years.

    Excellent New Mexican breakfast

    I'm often suspicious of restaurants in nice hotels: they're often overpriced and bland. This is really not the case with La Plazuela. Go for breakfast (you often won't need a reservation, but it may depend on the season) and stick with the New Mexican specialties. The ambiance is pleasant and friendly, the hotel is lovely, and the food is both delicious and very affordable. This is not wimpy food: the red sauce has a serious and authentic kick, the black beans are smoky and tender, and the posole is rich and studded with pieces of braised pork. Writing this is making me hungry.
