Introducing Springfield
The small state capital has a serious obsession with Abraham Lincoln, who practiced law here from 1837 to 1861. Its Abe-related sights offer an in-depth look at the man and his turbulent times, which only some cynics find overdone. Many of the attractions are walkable downtown and cost little to nothing. Get your bearings with maps from the central visitors center (800-545-7300; www.visitspringfieldillinois.com; 109 N 7th St; 8:30am-5pm Mon-Fri).
