De Ysbreeker information
The terrace at this café on the Amstel is glorious for watching the river lined with houseboats and other vessels gliding by. Inside, stylish drinkers hoist beverages in the plush booths and along the marble bar. It's great for organic and local beers (such as de Prael) and bar snacks such as lamb meatballs.
The building used to be an inn for the men who broke the ice on the Amstel so boats could pass (the art-glass windows in back depict the scene). Later it housed a major jazz and avant-garde music club – that institution became the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ. The building also gained fame as a billiards centre and there's still a table to play on.
