Lonely Planet review for Chatuchak Weekend Market

Among the largest markets in the world, Chatuchak Weekend Market seems to unite everything buyable, from used vintage sneakers to baby squirrels. JJ, as it’s also known, is the ideal place to finally pick up those gifts for people back home, not to mention a pretty item or two for your own home. The market is roughly divided into thematic sections, the best guide to these being Nancy Chandler’s Map of Bangkok. Because Chatuchak is a Thai institution, food also plays a significant role, and there are numerous drinks and snack vendors, and several good restaurants on the outside edges of the market. Plan to spend a full day, as there’s plenty to see, do and buy. But come early, ideally around 9am to 10am, to beat the crowds and the heat.

    A beautiful experience!

    sirissk recommends this,

Recommended for everyone who isn't bothered by a bit of noice and overcrowded places. You can find everything from small puppies to furniture and food there, and it's great to treat yourself to some footmassage after walking around in this labyrint of excitement. Tumbs up!

Wow. Like a kid in a very very big candy store

    whatwasseen recommends this,

I don't have high expectations for shopping experiences. I went for the ambience but got caught up in the variety, beauty, class and friendliness of the people whom I met. In one small stall I sat down and chatted with the owner for an hour about our shared hobby. At Hong Kong Waffle, I was introduced to new ways to make this old favorite. Prices are sometimes labeled; I wasn't sure where to begin bargaining. Half the requested price was frequently laughed off. Generally I could get 10-20% when I purchased multiple items. (Once I got about 50% off citing prices I'd found in another open market, but the proprietor seemed angry at himself afterward and didn't say good-bye as I left.) Mostly, though, there is a flow of people with new sites around each corner that made it fun for me.

Good for: people watching, cheap clothes, street food, handicrafts, household items

    Love walking around here

    planetprs recommends this,

I never get bored with this place. There is so much to eat and so much to see here. It's impossible to see everything in one day here so I would definitely allow myself at least 2 days! A really cool hotel near there is Mystic Place (http://www.mysticplacebkk.com). They even have a free tuk tuk shuttle service that takes you there. Anyways, a stop to Bangkok won't be complete without visiting this fabulous market.

    Shopping at Chatuchak Market

    brucee recommends this,

I'm not a big shopping fan, but I can't go to Bangkok without dropping in to Chatuchak Market. This has got to be one of the best markets, in the world, anywhere. Come prepared to walk - there is so much to see that you'll throughly tire yourself out, but it's worth it. There's no shortage of snacks to buy along the way. Try home-made icecream, frozen in tubes and sold in a traditional Thai way, from the back of a bike. Or something from the countless noodles stalls and fruit stalls. Once you've eaten your fill, get out there and shop, or browse. You can pick up anything from Thai knick-knacks to quality one-off artworks, clothes and shoes, silks and woodcarvings. The prices may not be the cheapest, but here is one place where you can really hone your bargaining skills.

Good for: walking, Shopping, Immersing in Thai culture
