No prizes for guessing which dish takes centre stage here. The modern café ambience suits the lightness of the raw materials, but be prepared for busy workday crowds sharing your enthusiasm for the fare.

    Edo

Edo is a bold attempt at exoticism that seems to be paying off. Modern Japanese décor adds flavour to tempura, salads and sushi dishes, while Polish waiters in Japanese attire are a new take on the Far East.

  13. Gallery Restaurant

Fine food is the watchword in the two gracious dining rooms occupying Gallery’s cellar, with a bar, and dancing on Friday and Saturday nights. The street-level café provides a more relaxed alternative.

  14. Knajpa U Fryzjera

For funky flavour fusions in a weathered old hair-salon, U Fryzjera is a prime choice for breakfast, lunch or dinner. For the first meal of the day, perhaps try the ‘Day After Sick Kitten’ breakfast.

    Tomo

Tomo’s sushi bar, gazing at the little boats ferrying tiny morsels of sushi and maki in never-ending circles. The likes of tempura and teriyaki are also available, and staff are friendly and English-speaking.

    Bar Mleczny Neptun

Ultrabudget dining in an original communist-era milk bar, though this joint is a cut above your run-of-the-mill bar mleczny, with potted plants, lace curtains, decorative tiling and old lamps for décor.

    La Campana Trattoria

Not that Kraków needed another Italian restaurant, but this one boasts the city's most delightful, flower-filled courtyard setting. On a summer day, there is no better place to sip pinot grigio and munch on antipasti.

A tiny oasis in the concrete jungle, housed within a curious circular building. Service is impeccable and a good variety of Polish and Bavarian nouvelle cuisine is on offer. Try the ice-meringue with strawberry mousse.

  21. Greenway

Another branch of the popular Polish chain. Pick up a large portion of the usual offerings, such as Mexican goulash, enchiladas and spinach quiche. Grab a real fruit shake and head for the quiet outdoor patio at the rear.

    Sakana Sushi Bar

With sushi and sashimi floating around in little boats that loop around a ‘canal’ encircling a communal figure-eight table, the Sakana just has to be different. There’s tempura too and some unusual soups.

  25. Maat

For casual dining overlooking the canal in the town centre, try this place. Its upstairs timber balcony with a fishy motif has water views, and the staff serve up excellent pizzas, and a range of salads, pasta and fish dishes.

  26. Restauracja Kaskada

You can spot this big, modern, multilevel eatery from almost any point on the Rynek. Indecisive diners can ponder their options inside, outside or in the adjoining snack bar; if all else fails, the kiosk here is open 24 hours.

    Różowy Słoń

Pepto-pink plastic furniture and mural-painted walls liven up the milk-bar atmosphere at the 'pink elephant'. So this is what they mean when they say 'See you in the funny papers'. Recommended for naleszniki (crêpes).
