Introducing Bayankhongor City
The broad avenues, cantonment-style apartment blocks and parade ground in front of a monolithic Government House are straight out a Soviet planner’s briefcase. There are also large patches of waste ground as if the builders gave up halfway through the project. Although the town itself is nothing special, the Khangai Nuruu, with several peaks of 3000m or more, is not too far away. You’ll probably have to stay here if on a long haul to or from the west, to start explorations to more remote regions in the south, or to go on a day trip to the nearby springs at Shargaljuut.
