Lonely Planet review for Hashem Restaurant

A legendary place that overflows into the alley, Hashem is incredibly popular with locals for felafel, hummus and fuul (fava-bean paste). A filling meal with bread and mint tea costs around JD1. As one reader extolled: ‘nothing but bread, hummus, fuul and felafel, but everything is fresh and dirt cheap. We love this place!’

Mutam Al Hashem what an experience. A tiny restaurant tucked in an alley in Downtown Amman(follow your nose you'll find it). This place is a national institution, everyone knows it, whether they go there or not. It's been there since the beginning of time, so has the man at the till.
You just walk in, sit at a table and along comes a waiter. We just asked for a taster of everything, there's no menu as there's not a lot of choices. We watched the cooks sizzling felafel in giant vats of oil and slapping hummus and fuul into tiny bowls. When they know you're watching they become very dramatic.
Along came hummus and fuul swimming in Ajlouni olive oil, with garlicky lemon sauce and the most amazing felafels ever (normal ones and giant ones stuffed with onions) accompanied by loads of koubiz to scoop it all up with, an art in itself.
The waiters come round with trays of tiny glasses of hot sweet mint tea but there's also pepsi if you want something cold (and not as sweet as the tea).
It's a great cheap local restaurant if you want to eat with the locals, not too many tourists go there. Everybody is friendly and talks to you, but being in Downtown females should dress modestly.
Everything about this place is great (except maybe the plastic furniture) go there a couple of times and the waiters will call you by your name and bring your usual over.
