Circolo degli Artisti
One of Rome's nightlife venues that hits the spot, Circolo is the place for alternative music gigs. Friday night cracks open the electronica and house for gay night – Omogenic – and Saturday sees the fun-packed Screamadelica (punk-funk, ska and new wave), usually also featuring a live band. There's even a cool garden bar and admission is either free or a snip.

La Casa del Jazz
In the middle of a 2500-sq-m park in the southern suburbs, the Casa del Jazz (House of Jazz) is housed in a three-storey 1920s villa that belonged to a Mafia boss. When he was caught, the Comune di Roma (Rome Council) converted it into a jazz-tastic complex, including a 150-seat auditorium, rehearsal rooms, cafe and restaurant, and it hosts regular shows by international stars, such as Joan as Policewoman. From mid-June to mid-September it hosts the Casa del Jazz Festival.

To wallow in the Eternal City blues, there's only one place to go – this cramped Trastevere basement, which also hosts jazz, funk, soul and R&B.

Fonclea
Fonclea is a great little pub venue for live music, with bands playing anything from jazz to soul, funk to rockabilly and African sounds (gigs start at around 9.30pm). Get in the mood with a drink during happy hour, every day between 7pm and 8pm. From June to August Fonclea moves to a summer riverside site on the Tiber – check the website for details about the location.

Gregory’s
If it were a voice tone, it’d be husky: unwind in the downstairs bar then unwind some more on squashy sofas upstairs to some slinky live jazz, with quality local performers. Gregory’s is a popular hang-out for local musicians.

Lettere Caffè Gallery
Like books? Poetry? Blues and jazz? Then you’ll love this place – a clutter of barstools and books, where there are regular live gigs, poetry slams, comedy and gay nights, followed by DJ sets playing indie and new wave.

Charity Café
Think narrow space, spindly tables, dim lighting and a laidback vibe: this is a place to snuggle down and listen to some slinky live jazz. Supremely civilised, relaxed, untouristy and very Monti.
