Dance of the demons, Valls, Spain

Story behind the picture

“Fire is an essential part of folk traditions in the Mediterranean. One of the expressions of this tradition is the Ball de Diables (demons’ dance), which consists of a correfoc (fire run), a parade of demons. I took my picture at the correfoc that marks the last stage of the Festivity of St John, the patron saint of my home town, Valls. It’s so exciting to be there, with the correfoc running down different streets through the town, and everywhere the smell of gunpowder and the sound of exploding fireworks. It was such a dramatic and spectacular scene, I had to take a photo. I needed to be careful to follow the demons at a safe distance so I didn’t get burnt by the sparks!” We’d love to include your best new travel photos (at 300dpi) and the inspiring stories behind them. Send them with a pic of yourself to postcards@lptraveller.co.uk
