Yes, it’s touristy, but the atmosphere’s wonderful at this cavernous enoteca -cum-restaurant in a 15th-century palazzo with frescoed domes, vaulted brick ceilings and chequerboard marble floors. Regional specialities are complemented by an encyclopaedic wine list.

All hail Austrian-run Pois for its laid-back boho vibe. Its sofas invite lazy afternoons spent reading novels and guzzling coffee. Creative salads and sandwiches with names like Sepp (olive, pesto and Emmental) go nicely with tangy juices. There’s a kids’ play area.

A favourite with off-duty chefs and local foodies, Jacques infallibly charms with flattering candlelight, warm decor and fantastic wine. It’s the perfect date spot but, quite frankly, you only have to be in love with good food to appreciate the French- and North African-inspired blackboard menu. Charismatic owner Ahmad or his staff will happily recommend the perfect matching wine. Reservations essential.

Chihuahua Cantina Mexicana
No matter how good the local cuisine is, sometimes the palate cries out for exotic spices. The tapas, fajitas and empanadas may be ersatz Mexican, but it is a refreshing change from pasta, risotto and fish. Plus there are vegetarian dishes to fortify the lively young crowd.

Few places take chill-out to the honed level of this great bar. Hammocks, deckchairs and discerning sounds set the pace and kids are well looked after here. It's just along the northern arm of Mylopotas beach. There's live music too, and Tex-Mex food is the main attraction.

In a glorious former Dutch Reformed Church, the light-filled, Middle Eastern-style decor matches the Middle Eastern-style food. Fish and chicken dishes please meat eaters; aubergine and portobello mushroom dishes gratify vegetarians. Breakfast and lunch are served all day.
