    Palms

If you can cope with its skinny bronzed bodies then head for Palms.

  2. B

    La Taberna de Santiago

Blue tiles adorn this refined tapas bar and the blue sea is in view from its terraza, as are the curious sculptures on pedestrian Avenida del Mar. Go for cockles, fried sardines, jamón serrano (mountain-cured ham) or even snails in thyme sauce.

  3. C

    La Taberna del Pintxo

Grab a table and a plate and choose from a huge range of hot and cold tapas, such as the goats' cheese tart with cranberry jelly. At the end of the evening, the little swords or toothpicks from each tapa are counted and you are charged accordingly.

    La Comedia

Along with popular 1st-floor tables looking down on the little plaza, a charming candlelit room, and a mix of interesting art and photography on the walls, you get a very warm welcome from the Irish hosts, and a good selection of classic, Spanish and international dishes for carnivores and vegetarians alike.

A good-value, family-run restaurant just off the seafront. Food ranges from raciones to full-blown meals. The restaurant also has a quaint small library and a comprehensive wine list.

  6. F

    El Balcón de la Virgen

One of the best restaurants near Plaza de los Naranjos, this has a lovely summer terraza overlooked by a 300-year-old grieving Virgin and a large bougainvillea, vibrant pink against the bright-blue paintwork. The fare is typical Andalucian.

    Bar Bartolo

Bar Bartolo is a good old-town spot for varied tapas and strong, viscous coffee. If it's busy, just elbow your way in.

  9. Prego

This perpetually busy Italian restaurant manages to create a modern ambience in a traditional setting. It dishes up excellent pasta, pizza and fillet steak at very reasonable prices, and the service matches the cuisine.

  13. K

    Crooked House of Windsor

This little black-and-white house looks like it's had too much to drink. Enjoy a light lunch, a Royal cream tea (tea and scones with clotted cream and jam) or dinner (bring your own wine). A member of the Slow Food movement, which advocates healthy eating, this adorable restaurant sources its produce locally.

  14. Le Comptoir du Foie Gras/Maison Pujol

This quirky place morphs from a shop selling jars of outstanding foie gras in the day to a tapas bar in the evening. Needless to say the tapas are foie gras heavy, but they also have more vegetarian-suitable options such as those made with guacamole. It’s so small that you’ll probably end up standing outside shouting your order through the bar window.

  15. La Santa María

This place, balanced haphazardly on the rocks at the far end of our favourite Biarritz beach, the cute Plage du Port Vieux, is a fantastic place for a sunset drink and a plate of tapas (€12), but sadly they know the positioning is worth gold and so they charge likewise!

    Bar Jean

The most original, and delicious, selection of tapas in the city is served up with a flamenco soundtrack and a backdrop of blue and white Andalucian tiles. Try the calamari rings wrapped around a stack of lardons and drizzled in olive oil – simply divine. Jean also does raciones (plates) for around €6 to €7.

  18. Taj Mahal

It’s highly unlikely you came to Wittenberg for a dish of spicy Indian, but while you’re here, this makes for a nice change from traditional fare.

  20. La Cuchara de San Telmo

La Cuchara de San Telmo is a hidden-away bar serving such delights as carrílera de ternera al vino tinto (calf cheeks in red wine), with meat so tender it starts to dissolve almost before it’s past your lips.

    Pain de Campagne

Sandwich shops are in no short supply in St-Malo, but many of them are sub-par and expensive. The cheerful little Pain de Campagne is where locals come for creative sandwich combinations on a variety of breads, and at least a couple of hot meals per day.
