    Friedrichsbad

If it’s the body of Venus and the complexion of Cleopatra you desire, abandon modesty (and clothing) to wallow in thermal waters at this sumptuous 19th-century spa. As Mark Twain put it, ‘after 10 minutes you forget time; after 20 minutes, the world’, as you slip into the regime of steaming, scrubbing, hot-cold bathing and dunking in the Roman-Irish bath. With its cupola, mosaics and Carrera marble pool, the bathhouse is the vision of a neo-Renaissance palace.

  15. Greenway Bicycle Trail

The region around the Bieszczady (byesh-chah-di), in the far SW corner of Poland and sandwiched between Ukraine and Slovakia, is one of thick forests and open meadows. Scantily populated and largely unspoilt, it's one of the most attractive areas of the country. One of the most exciting developments in recent years is the completion of the 350km bicycle loop known as the Greenway Bicycle Trail, which links the Bieszczady towns of Sanok, Lesko, Ustrzyki Dolne and Solina before crossing into Ukraine, Slovakia and back into Poland.

  18. Kazimierz Landscape Park

In 1979, the area around Kazimierz was decreed the Kazimierz Landscape Park . Many walking trails have been traced in its 15,000 hectares, winding through the distinct gorges of the region.

There are three easy short trails known as szlaki spacerowe (walking routes) signposted in yellow, green and red, and three significantly longer treks called szlaki turystyczne (tourist routes) marked in blue, green and red. Almost all these routes originate in the Rynek. The tourist office sells maps of the park and its trails.

Good local agents can take the organisational hassle out of any kind of activity, from a city tour to a hiking expedition, and good guides can open your eyes to things you'd otherwise never know.

  27. Walking

No one can accuse Chişinău of being overburdened with tourist sights. Lacking in 'must-sees', it's more a pleasant city to wander about in and discover as you go. Sadly, little remains of its historic heart due to heavy bombing during WWII. There are still some great museums and parks, however, and it is fun to see how Communist iconography merges with symbols of Moldovan nationalism.

Begin smack in the centre, where Chişinău's best-known parks oppose each other diagonally, forming two diamonds at the city's core.

    Luka

Though cycling is very popular with locals, the dearth of bike-hire agents makes it tough for visitors. Luka is the only agency that hires bikes (800Sk per day). A good, but steep, route from the Luka office northeast of the centre is to continue north on Kysucká to the picnic and park area of Železná studienka, where there's a chairlift. The adventurous can transport themselves and the bike up via the chairlift and ride back down the mountain cycle path..

Flatter routes include along the Danube to Devín castle (8km).
