  1. Lesbian & Gay Heritage Trail

    Manchester's gay scene is unsurpassed outside London, and caters to every taste. The useful Gay & Lesbian Village Guide, available from the tourist office, lists numerous gay bars, clubs, galleries and groups. It also runs the Lesbian & Gay Heritage Trail (around £5; ;15:00 1st Sun of month), a 90-minute walking tour of the city's pink links, some of which date back to the early 1800s.

    One of the more offbeat ways to enjoy live music is to ride the Folk Train, a one-hour journey between Manchester and Hathersage in the Peak District. On-board entertainment is blues, folk, Irish and old-style country music, played by a rotating list of terrific local bands. There’s nothing formal about it: just get on board and enjoy the music. The train departs from Manchester Piccadilly.
