Travel Warning: Energy Crisis - Border Alerts
After a severe, nationwide energy crisis during winter 2008, Dushanbe is back to normal, but rural areas are still experiencing shortages of energy and food. Travellers should seek local advice before venturing further afield than the capital.
The border with Afghanistan is considered risky for travellers, as are mined areas bordering Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. Take extra care also in the Karategin valley around Garm. Seek consular advice before travel to these areas and local advice upon arrival.
