Life on the lagoon, Zanzibar

Story behind the picture

“Jambiani lies on a tidal lagoon, protected by coral reef, on the Zanzibar coast. At low tide, the beach becomes the workplace of women and children who harvest seaweed from racks pegged into the sand, for export to the Far East. I’ve seen the beach described as otherworldly and I wouldn’t argue with that – the colours this day were amazing. Two women approached without me even noticing them. They spoke no English and smiled shyly when I asked with hand signals if I could take their picture. The sun, sea, sand and seaweed made it an amazing scene anyway, and the arrival of the two women in equally brightcoloured dresses made it one I had to capture.” We’d love to include your best new travel photos (at 300dpi) and the inspiring stories behind them.
