This colonial town has the lot, it seems: cobblestone streets, flower-filled plazas and more Castilian mansions than the rest of the island put together. Along with La Laguna, La Orotava is one of the loveliest towns on Tenerife, and one of the most truly ‘Canarian’ places in the Canary Islands.

An umbrella-shaped drago tree is the cause of a lot of fuss in this town. Indeed, it’s worth a look, and the shady main square, Plaza San Marcos, is a lovely, leafy spot to rest and enjoy the town’s white-walled church. Other than this plaza and the tiny kernel of old streets leading off it, the town is not the most inspiring of places.
