Anne of Green Gables – The Musical has been entertaining audiences here as part of the Charlottetown Festival since 1964, making it Canada's longest-running musical.     In celebration of Celtic dance and music, this school provides visitors with free 20-minute miniconcerts from Monday to Friday at 11:30am, 1:30pm and 3:30pm – expect bagpipes, singing and dancing. Inspired? Put on some warm clothes and make sure you enjoy the two-hour ceilidhs that take place every night in the covered amphitheater.

    Cars park three-deep outside this teeny red-and-white seafood shack, a summertime tradition in these parts. Order your clam platter or juicy, dripping cheeseburger, and claim one of the red-painted picnic tables. Don't forget an ice-cream cone! It's in Chamcook, about 9 km north of St Andrews.

    Volunteer for six hours per day (anything from stringing wires to cleaning) and get free room and board at this center for polar bear and other wildlife research.

    CNSC, on the old rocket range 23km east of town, is an active base for researchers from around the world. Learning vacations feature all-inclusive (dorms, meals and local transportation) multiday courses with real scientists working on projects involving belugas, wildflowers, birds and polar bears. There are also courses in winter survival, northern lights and astronomy. An impressive new center is set to open in 2011.

    St George's Round Church was built in 1800 and is a rare circular Palladian church with a main rotunda 18m in diameter. Tours are by arrangement. Tours of the 1756 Little Dutch Church, the second-oldest building in Halifax, can also be arranged through St George's. The Cornwallis St Baptist Church has been serving African Nova Scotians since the 1830s. Walk by on Sunday morning and hear the gospel music overflow its walls.
