    Livraria Prefácio

This charming bookshop stocks a small selection of foreign titles as well as music. And perusers need not go hungry or thirsty while they browse for titles: a slender bar in front delivers refreshing glasses of chope (draft beer), while seating upstairs and in the café in back offers heartier fare. The bookshop hosts an occasional poetry reading or record-release party.

    Odeon Petrobras

Rio de Janeiro's landmark cinema is a remnant of the once flourishing movie-house scene that gave rise to the name Cinelândia. The restored 1920s film palace shows independent films, documentaries and foreign films, and sometimes hosts the gala for prominent film festivals. It also shows worthwhile monthly events like the Maratona Odeon, a three-film movie marathon that runs from 11pm to 6am on the first Friday of the month (admission R$20). Next door, the restaurant and café of Ateliê Culinârio opens around weekend screenings and makes a great spot for a bite before or after weekend screenings.
