Introducing Rio Branco
Rio Branco, the capital of Acre, was founded in 1882 by rubber tappers on the banks of the Rio Acre. Once a brash, uneasy town, Rio Branco has transformed itself into a genuinely pleasant place, with easy access to some interesting sites, including Xapuri, the hometown of union leader and environmentalist Chico Mendes. Unfortunately for Rio Branco, few travelers make it here for the simple reason that it’s not on the way to or from anywhere travelers commonly go.

Note that Rio Branco (and the entire state of Acre) is an hour behind Porto Velho and Manaus, and two hours behind Brazilian Standard Time.
