  4. Donggua Divine Tree Trail

  5. County Road

The County Rd (北42) follows the contours of the Beishi River (the source of Taipei's drinking water) from a high perch, affording outstanding views of this natural landscape. A beautiful ride is to follow the above route from Muzha to Pinglin, connect to the 北42, and then ride all the way to where it connects with Provincial Hwy 2丙, heading towards Fulong Beach. This is a full-day outing for most cyclists. At the end, Fulong Beach, you can ship your bike back to Taipei on a train or bus.

  7. Chihnan National Forest Recreation Area

This small forest reserve preserves the history of Taiwan's logging industry. The old steam locomotive engines steal the show, though the museum of old logging equipment and the cable system are pretty interesting, too. The visitor centre has an informative English brochure that includes a simple map. Sometimes there are English-speaking tour guides available.

The reserve is just west of the lake. There are clear signs to it in English.

  8. Cedarwood Villa

Though slate walled and not made of cedarwood at all, this quiet and stylish hotel offers large marble soaking rooms with huge windows overlooking a superb stretch of Taian's mountain. It's the kind of place you take someone special to. The hotel also has rooms for overnight stays.

The resort sits on its own on the side of a mountain up a rough side road.

  10. Calla Young Garden Resort

This new hot-spring resort is tops in every way, from the outdoor co-ed pools offering varying temperatures for soaking (with amazing views of Yangmingshan to the south and Jinshan and the Taiwan Strait to the north), to the semi-enclosed sex-separated multi-temperature pools. All this makes Calla especially worth the trip, but what puts the resort over the top is its restaurant, with an excellent chef who excels at creating Japanese/Chinese/Western fusion dishes that may well be one of the culinary highlights of your Taiwan experience. Though you can come here just for a soak (or spend the night for that matter; check the website for Calla's various package deals), the…

  11. Bitan to Xiaogetou cycling

This loop ride starts out at Bitan, at the end of the Red MRT line, climbs up Provincial Hwy 9 to Xiaogetou (about 14km from Bitan) and then drops back down towards Taipei on the winding 北47 or 北47-1. The latter roads run along steep mountainsides before dropping into Shihting (石碇; Shídìng). From there it's a flat ride back to Taipei on the 106乙 via Muzha and the city bike paths.

Instead of turning back at Xiaogetou you can also continue another 10km to Pinglin. It's all downhill just past Helen Coffee and the views over the green-blue Feicui Reservoir are spellbinding.

From Pinglin, riders sometimes continue to Jiaoshi on the coast. This is about 40km further,…
