Gwabi Lodge

Campground, chalet in Chirundu

This long-running lodge owned by a Zimbabwean family is set on large, leafy grounds 12km northeast of Chirundu. There's a well-equipped camping ground (popular with overland backpackers) and solid stone-floor chalets with TVs. The highlight is the lovely elevated outlook over the Kafue River, with the decking area in front of the restaurant providing a great spot to observe birds and hippos.

Fishing is definitely a draw, as is just having a poke around on a boat (per hour US$40, plus fuel); if you're feeling more adventurous, overnight canoe safaris can also be arranged (per night US$265).
