Royal Oak

This handsome brick coaching inn, which played host to Queen Victoria en route to Powis Castle, is home to a hushed and carpeted bistro. The indispensable burgers, lasagne and so on are joined by lesser-seen dishes such as beef bourguignon and 'hanging' chicken kebab (presented exactly as the name promises). The attached accommodation (single/double £80/100) is some of Welshpool's nicest.
