Fairbourne, nearly called 'South Barmouth', was planned in the 1860s as a seaside resort for holidaymakers from the West Midlands. Built on reclaimed marsh, it has a lovely long beach but few attractions beyond the steam-hauled Fairbourne Miniature Railway.
