National Eisteddfod

Performing Arts in Wales

Pronounced ey-steth-vot, this eight-day movable feast of Welsh culture is Europe’s largest festival of competitive music-making and poetry. Descended from ancient Bardic tournaments, it is conducted in Welsh, but the festival welcomes all entrants and visitors. It moves about each year, attracting some 150,000 visitors.

Three gorsedd (Bardic get-together) ceremonies take place during Eisteddfod, presided over by the archdruid, with prizes for best poetry and prose presented by robed druids – individuals who've made significant contributions to Welsh, poetry, prose, music and culture.
