Built in 1868 and shut down in 1965, this narrow-gauge railway was rescued by volunteers, who reopened the 4.5-mile stretch from Bala to Llanuwchllyn in 1971. Up to four vintage locomotives depart from the little station at Penybont each day, skirting the lake for a scenic 90-minute return journey. Penybont is half a mile from Bala, off the B4391.
