Boat

From Hon Gai Pier, across the suspension bridge from Halong City (Bai Chay), there is one daily speedboat service to Quan Lan Island at 1.30pm (200,000d, 1½ hours).

From Tuan Chau Pier, 13km southwest of central Halong City, there are three car ferries to Cat Ba Island's Gia Luan Pier at 8am, 11.30am and 3pm (per person/motorbike 80,000/20,000d, one hour) throughout the year, with hourly services during the peak period of late May to early August.

Bus

All buses leave from Bai Chay bus station, 6km south of central Halong City (Bai Chay). For Tam Coc, hop on the Ninh Binh–bound bus.

There are regular services to Cai Rong on Van Don Island, where ferries depart for the islands of Bai Tu Long Bay from Cai Rong Pier (Cai Rong Pha).

Note that many buses to Halong City will be marked ‘Bai Chay’.

Halong City is 160km from Hanoi and 55km from Haiphong. The one-way trip from Hanoi takes about three hours by private vehicle.
